These rare rhinos are found in eastern and southern Africa, and their population is down by 98%. In fact, the western black rhino was counted among the extinct animals in 2011. But one of the subspecies, the southwestern black rhinoceros, isn’t subjected to the threat. With just 5,500 rhinos remaining, the species is still subjected to poaching as their horns are used in traditional folk medicine in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
