The criteria for enrolling for RN to BSN programs
The primary criteria to get an admission in any RN to BSN nursing degree program is across the country is that nursing or nursing diploma-holder must pass the NCLEX-RN exam and achieve their nursing license in order to be admitted into an accredited RN to BSN program.
Admission into an RN to BSN degree program requires a current RN license. Though the transfer of previously studied courses is common, there are RN to BSN programs that accept courses with a minimum GPA that is determined by the school.
For instance, an institution may allow students to transfer courses that have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Courses with a GPA lower than this must be retaken. The transferred credits are also evaluated to ensure they meet specific requirements. The same criteria is applicable for RN to BSN online degree program.
RN to BSN nyursing degree programs are part of liberal arts education. The program is designed to foster knowledge of science, humanities, and society.
The foundation of the course requires a high level of intellectual and practical skills, which is an active commitment to personal and social responsibility.
Depending on the coursework and the institution, the admission criteria to RN to BSN programs may include
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher in ADN or any nursing diploma program
- Admission essay

- Letters of recommendation
- Faculty interview
Special exams
Some programs also currently require prospective nursing students to qualify for Elsevier’s HESI Admission Assessment prior to getting an admission in RN to BSN degree programs as well as RN to BSN online degree programs. The exam comprises 7 components including mathematics, reading comprehension, grammar, biology, chemistry, and anatomy.
Criminal background check
Some RN to BSN programs require students to undergo a criminal background check, physical examination, or drug screening before they can participate in any of the components of the course.
Clinical experiences are a part of any RN to BSN nursing degree program. They are specific to the particular institution through which RN to BSN programs are completed.
