7 Bollywood movies to look forward to this year
2020 gave us some fantastic movies, and from the many announcements the Bollywood industry has made, 2021 looks like a promising year with great cinematic surprises. We’ve whittled down the massive list of upcoming films all set to hit the theaters, and it includes dramas, sports movies, comedies, and everything in between. Let’s just say Fridays are starting to look a lot more amazing.
Gangubai Kathiawadi – 30th July 2021
Alia Bhatt—who plays the lead role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial movie Gangubai Kathiawadi—took to social media to announce its release. The film is based on Hussain Zaidi’s Mafia Queens of Mumbai and takes us back to the 1960s Kamathipura, whose alleys were ruled by the powerful and remarkable brothel madam Gangubai. The teaser gave us a sneak peek of what’s to come, and let’s just say Bhansali’s cinematic vision and Alia’s hard-hitting dialogues have us sold!
Brahmastra – To be announced
This movie has been in the making for over two years, and it’s all set to release this year. Brahmastra, written and directed by Ayan Mukerji, is a superhero trilogy featuring Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Akkineni Nagarjuna, and Mouni Roy in pivotal roles. The film is set in contemporary India and finds its roots in mythology.
‘83 – 4th June 2021
The sports drama film, directed by Kabir Khan, tells the story of 14 men who led India to victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. The much-awaited movie, starring Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, promises to make us relive the fervor of the dramatic World Cup. The film will also see Deepika Padukone, Saqib Saleem, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Ammy Virk, Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, and Amrita Puri in pivotal roles.
Radhe – May 2021
We’ve seen Salman Khan play Radhe in his iconic films Tere Naam and Wanted, but this Prabhu Deva directorial has no connection with these movies. It will most likely be released on Eid, like all Salman Khan movies; however, the date is yet to be locked. The commercial entertainer is said to a franchise like Dabangg and will see Disha Patani and Randeep Hooda in lead roles.
Sooryavanshi – 2nd April 2021
Sooryavanshi is among the many, many movies we’ll see Akshay Kumar in this year. Kumar’s character, DCP Veer Sooryavanshi, the chief of the Anti-Terrorism Squad, was introduced toward the end of Simmba. Katrina Kaif will play the lead role alongside Kumar in this cop-action drama by Rohit Shetty and Karan Johar. We’ll also get to see Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh in cameo roles.
Jersey – 5th November 2021
Jersey, a remake of a 2019 Telugu film of the same title, will hit the screens this Diwali. Shahid Kapoor will play the lead role of a cricketer in this sports drama. The adaptation, directed by Gowtam Tinnanauri, tells the story of a gifted but failed cricketer who embarks on a journey to make it to the Indian cricket team and fulfill his son’s wish.
Laal Singh Chaddha – 24th December 2021
Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir Khan’s passion project, is a remake of the iconic 1994 film Forrest Gump. Like the American movie, the adaptation tells the story of a simpleminded man who finds himself in the middle of key historical events. The film also stars Kareena Kapoor and Mona Singh in pivotal roles.
